AACC Uses Strong Second Half to Beat Hagerstown
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team squandered a first half lead, as Anne Arundel defeated HCC, 3-1 on sophomore day.
The Hawks dominated play early and jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when they netted a goal just five minutes into the match. Freshman Jermaine Hardy, Jr. (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) attacked down the left side of the field and served in a ball that found the head of teammate Alejandro C. Oliart (Germantown, Md./Northwest). Oliart would rise up and hammer the ball into the net for his team leading 16th goal of the year. Hardy would be credited with his 11th assist on the year and needs just one more to beat the single-season record.
HCC looked to extend the lead in the 14th minute but freshman Thomas Alvarez (Germantown, Md./Clarksville) had his shot from eight yards out tip over the crossbar off the hands of the AACC goalkeeper. Hagerstown would still control the first half as they outshot Anne Arundel 6-2.
The second half would be a different story though as the Riverhawks set the tone in the 51st minute when they tapped in a through ball past sophomore Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard). Just two minutes they would net the game winning goal when a shot off the crossbar would be settled by an AACC player and then hit back into the goal. Hagerstown would mount a few attacks but the shots would either go wide or directly to the netminder.
Anne Arundel would tally an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when they broke in behind the Hawk defenders and finish a breakaway opportunity. With the loss, HCC falls to 6-9-2 and plays their last regular season game at College of Southern Maryland at 4:00pm.
The Hawks will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, October 24 at 2:00pm but the opponent is still undetermined.
