Battle of the Birds for the Region XX Division I Semi Finals
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team will square off against Harford Community College in the Region XX Division I Semi Finals.
The Hawks earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament and defeated No. 6 Catonsville in the Quarterfinals, 3-0. The Fighting Owls enter the match as the No. 2 seed and an automatic bye.
HCC (8-9-1, 5-7-0) comes into the match having won three of their last four games and outscoring their opponents 11-6. Hagerstown boasts a powerful offense, ranked first in Region XX, Division I with 67 goals and 54 assists. The last time the Hawks squared off against Harford was on September 8 and the Fighting Owls came from behind to win the game, 4-2. On the road, HCC is 3-4-1, while Harford is 6-2-0 at home. Harford is 6-1-1 in their last eight matches.
The Fighting Owls are led by Sophomore, John Lynn, who has eight goals and three assists for 19 points. Harford also features freshman Corey Alt and sophomore sophomore Justin Almquist. Almquist has started in goal 14 times, recording 114 saves.
Freshman, Alejandro C. Oliart (Germantown, Md./Northwest), leads Hagerstown Community College with his Division I leading, 18 goals, four assists, for 40 points. Freshman Jermaine Hardy, Jr. (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) is second on the team in points with 35, coming from 11 goals and 13 assists. Freshman Thomas Alvarez (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) is also a key contributor for the Hawks, with six goals and eight assists for 20 points. In net, Hagerstown starts sophomore, Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard). This season, Mejia leads MDJUCO with 120 saves and boasts a .811 save percentage.
The winner will face the winner of No. 1 CCBC-Essex (13-5-0, 11-1-0) and No. 4 seed College of Southern Maryland (6-8-0, 6-6-0). The Division I Region XX Championship is scheduled for Saturday, October 31 at the home of the higher remaining seed.
