Velazquez Propels HCC to MDJUCO Victory over Anne Arundel

Hagerstown, Md. - Freshman Jusseth Velazquez (Frederick, Md./Frederick) netted two second half goals to ignite a Hagerstown Community College (5-3-0)  victory over Anne Arundel Community College. The Hawks win over AACC was the first in seven years.

The first half saw action controlled by HCC, but their chances would be held in check, as they could not crack the scoreboard. The Hawks held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.

Hagerstown would come out of the intermission and completely dominate the game, getting a chance just one minute into the new half. Freshman Jonah Smith (Wayesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) would connect on a header, but saw his chance glance off the post and out of play. In the 51st minute, Smith and Velazquez attacked just one Pioneer defender, but the 2 v 1 chance would be saved by the AACC goalkeeper.

The Hawks continued to press for a goal, and they finally broke through in the 67th minute, when freshman Jacob Hargett (Middletown, Md./Middletown) sent a long ball into the path of Velazquez. Velazquez would sprint 40 yards, outrunning an Anne Arundel defender to get himself one on one with the goalkeeper, before he would slot the breakaway chance into the net.

In the 79th minute, Velazquez would strike again when he rebounded a shot saved by the AACC keeper and hammered the ball into the goal. The Hawks would put the game out of reach in the 88th minute when freshman Akheem Riley (Kingston, Jamaica/Thomas Johnson) would be fouled inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. Sophomore Matt Suddith (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) would step up to the spot and convert the free kick chance.

HCC sophomore goalkeeper Adam Carrier (Cumberland, Md./Calvary Christian Academy) would be credited with nine saves in the shutout victory.

With the win, the Hawks remain undefeated at home, outscoring their opponents 22-1. HCC goes on the road for the next four games, starting with Westmoreland on September 23 at 4:00pm.

He would need just one quick move before placing his shot past the Wolfpack goalkeeper.
The match would head into half deadlocked at 1-1. The second half would be dominated by the Hawks and in the 73rd minute, Sopa would net his second goal on the afternoon.
