Hawks Rally But Fall Short Against Anne Arundel C.C.
Arnold, Md. - After surrendering a first half goal, the Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team rallied late in the game; however, Anne Arundel C.C. was able to net the game winner for a 2-1 MDJUCO win.
The Hawks found themselves down 1-0 in the 30th minute, when a Pioneer played ricocheted a ball off the back of an HCC defender and into the corner of the goal. AA would hold the advantage heading into halftime.
Hagerstown would come out in the second half with better energy and would control much of the possession and garner the most chances. In the 53rd minute, sophomore Zack Morgan (Greencastle, Pa./Grace Academy) would riffle a shot which was saved by the goalkeeper and the ensuing rebound off Mamadou Jallow (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) would be cleared off the line by a Pioneer defender. Morgan found himself in on goal again in the 57th minute when he chipped the goalie from 12 yards out, but he had to watch as his chance skimmed off the side post and out of play.
The Hawks continued to battle for the equalizer and in the 70th minute HCC was awarded a free kick just outside the goal box. A chip from Garrett Hajjar (Frederick, Md./Urbana) found the diving head of Daniel Lennox (Frederick, Md./Urbana), but again the ball was cleared off the goal-line by an AA defender.
Hagerstown finally broke through in the 86th minute, when Hajjar would cross the ball into the box and Morgan would head it home. HCC let their guard down though and would give up the game-winner just 30 seconds later when an Anne Arundel forward would slice through the Hawk defense and blast the ball into the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Chip Rittenhouse (Hagerstown, Md./South) finished the game with seven saves.
The Hawks will travel to MDJUCO opponent Allegany Community College on September 16 at 3:30pm.
