Strong Second Half Seals the Victory for HCC
Hagerstown, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team used five second half goals to secure the victory over MDJUCO opponent Cecil College, in their home opener.
Sophomore Garrett Hajjar (Frederick, Md./Urbana) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when he received a pass from freshman Chucky Kipe (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) and riffled a low shot into the net. Cecil would even the score in the 20th minute when an HCC defender headed the ball into their own goal. The two teams would go into the half deadlocked at 1-1.
Sophomore Zack Morgan (Greencastle, Pa./Grace Academy) put the Hawks up 2-1 in the 53rd minute when he hammered home a shot from a Hajjar pass. Hajjar then netted his second goal on the afternoon, when he headed the ball in the net off a cross from freshman Nelson Moreno (Hagerstown, Md./North). Freshman Jordan Payne (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) extended the lead to 4-1, when he took a perfectly played ball from teammate Mamadou Jallow (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) and slotted the ball into the far post side netting.
Cecil would chip away at the lead in the 65th minute when they scored from 25 yards out, past freshman keeper Chip Rittenhouse (Hagerstown, Md./South). Freshman Justin Yates (Adamstown, Md./Tuscarora) scored his first goal of the season when he took a through ball from Hajjar and cut back in the goal box, beat a defender, and bent the ball around the keeper. Morgan would cap off the scoring, making it 6-2, when he received a pass from Moreno and tapped the ball into the goal from six yards out.
Rittenhouse was credited with win in net and made five saves on the afternoon.
The Hawks stay at home and play MDJUCO opponent Howard C.C. on September 21 at 3:30pm.
