HCC Drops Second Straight Conference Match
Hagerstown, MD- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but they would eventually fall to conference opponent College of Southern Maryland, 3-1.
HCC would capture the lead just five minutes into the game, when an Edwin Reyes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) free kick would be miss-judged by the CSM goalkeeper. The ball was headed towards the net, when an intentional handball was called on a CSM defender and a red card and penalty kick were awarded. Freshman Garrett Hajjar (Frederick, Md./Urbana) would convert on the spot kick to give the HCC Hawks the 1-0 lead. CSM, playing a man down, would respond quickly and get on the board seven minutes later, when a low shot would beat sophomore keeper Derek Apple (Martinsburg, Wva./Faith Chrisitan Academy).
College of Southern Maryland would continue their attack and take the lead in the 43rd minute, when a lofted ball into the HCC box would be headed into the net. CSM would still battle without their extra attacker, and with nine minutes remaining in the contest, a shot sailed towards the upper corner of the HCC goal; however, halftime replacement keeper Brain Kukucka (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) would stretch to make the fantastic save and keep his team in the game. The HCC Hawks could not rally though and the College of Southern Maryland would extend their lead when a low shot initially stopped by Kukucka would be tapped in for the 3-1 advantage.
With the loss, the Hawks drop their second straight game and fall to 6-2-0 overall and 3-2 in the MDJUCO. HCC has a chance to rebound when #7 Essex County, NJ travels to play on Sunday at 3:30pm.
