Sopa Secures Comeback Win For Hawks
La Plata, Md. - Sophomore Genc Sopa (Kosovo, Europe/Lipian) netted the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-1 come from behind win over MDJUCO foe College of Southern Maryland.
CSM, an NJCAA Division I National Tournament participant last year, came into the game ranked #17 in the nation. Southern Maryland would test HCC early, hitting the post in the 12th minute off a counter attack play. Hagerstown would build an attack of their own when freshman Kwasi Ofosu Ameyaw (Hagerstown, Md./South) saw his shot get blocked in the 20th minute. CSM would tally the first goal on the afternoon in the 23rd minute, when they slipped a ball past the HCC defense and ricocheted the shot off sophomore goalkeeper Chucky Kipe (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
Hagerstown would rally after halftime and put immediate pressure on CSM, when just one minute into the half, freshman Brandon Redman (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) found himself chasing down a loose ball in the goal box, before the keeper could make a sliding save. In the 65th minute, Redman would net his first collegiate goal when he hammered home a ball headed down by Sopa.
It would look as though HCC would take the lead in the 82nd minute, but sophomore Mamadou Jallow (Gambia, Africa/Thomas Johnson) saw his point blank shot hit off the crossbar. Just one minute later, Sopa would give Hagerstown the 2-1 win, when he placed the ball past the keeper after receiving the pass from freshman Bobby Matusek (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
Kipe finished with 10 saves on the afternoon and helped HCC (1-1) earn their first win on the season. The Hawks travel to Cecil College on Friday for a 3:00 kickoff.
