Hagerstown Surrenders Lead, Falls to College of Southern Maryland
La Plata, MD. - The Hagerstown Community College (6-5-0) men's soccer team scored early, but eventually fell to MDJUCO opponent College of Southern Maryland, 4-2.
Just three minutes into the game, Hagerstown buried a goal when freshman Jonah Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) tapped a ball to classmate Akheem Riley (Kingston, Jamaica/Thomas Johnson) who put it in the net and gave HCC the early lead. CSM would rally and tie the game in the 17th minute, when a Southern Maryland forward beat freshman goalkeeper Ethan Waters (Martinsburg, W.Va./Hedgesville) to a loose ball and touched it around him for the empty net finish.
CSM would take the lead in the 39th minute when they lofted a ball to the back post that was header in past Waters. Hagerstown would respond and tie the game in the 44th minute, when freshman Jusseth Velazquez (Frederick, Md./Frederick) knocked in a loose ball after scramble in the goal box. CSM would net one final goal in the first half just 30 seconds later, when they would capitalize on a breakdown in the HCC defense.
College of Southern Maryland would put the game out of reach in the 57th minute when they put away a shot after a header knockdown beat second half replacement keeper Adam Carrier (Cumberland, Md./Calvary Christian Academy).
Waters would finish with five saves, while Carrier made four in the losing effort.
Hagerstown travels to Potomac State on September 29 for a 1:00pm non-conference kickoff.
