#4 Essex Slips Past Hagerstown C.C.
Essex, MD- The Essex Community College Knights, who came into the match garnering the #4 overall ranking in the nation and boasting an undefeated mark in the MDJUCO, slipped past Hagerstown for the 2-0 win.
HCC, playing their sixth nationally ranked team of the year, jumped on the Knights with high energy and had an early chance called back for offsides. Essex would respond in the 14th minute, after they were awarded a corner kick. The ensuing kick found the head of an Essex player who was able to flick it far post and into the upper corner of the goal. Both teams would finish out the half strong, with Essex still leading 1-0.
The Hawks started the second half strong and earned a corner kick, along with a few other chances early on. A foul at the top of the goalkeeper box resulted in a free kick for HCC, but they were unable to keep the shot low, as it went over the crossbar.
Sophomore Roland Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) would have a great opportunity to even the game; however, his first shot would be blocked by the keeper and his follow-up shot would be saved by a tackling defender.
Essex would notch another goal in the 69th minute when a shot from 30 yards out found the upper corner of the goal. The Knights would hold onto their lead and finish the game with the 2-0 win.
Sophomore keeper Brian Kukucka (Frederick, Md./Urbana) would make six saves on the evening. The Hawks return to action when they face non conference opponent Northern Virginia on Wednesday. The Hawks took down NOVA earlier in the season, 2-0.
