Hagerstown Battles CCBC-Essex to Double Overtime Draw
Hagerstown, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team battled for 110 minutes and came out with a 1-1 draw against MDJUCO contender CCBC-Essex.
For the third straight year, the Hawks and the Knights went to overtime, with Essex coming out on top with the win two of the three times.
The Knights jumped on the board first in the 40th minute when a shot from 20 yards out beat the diving freshman keeper, Kenny Frederickson (Hagerstown, Md./Grace Academy). HCC looked to equalize it just seconds before halftime, but a freshman Spencer Horst (Hagerstown, Md./Grace Academy) shot was cleared off the goal line by a sliding Knight defender.
Hagerstown continued to work for the tying goal and it finally came in the 83rd minute. Freshman Chucky Kipe (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) received the ball on the left side and attacked the goal. Just before he was able to get his shot off, he was taken out by the Essex goalkeeper and the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Zack Morgan (Greencastle, Pa./Grace Academy) confidently stepped up to the spot and buried the ball into the side netting. The game would end in regulation time, with the score tied 1-1.
HCC started off the first overtime period, setting the tone early. Morgan found himself on a breakaway just 44 seconds into extra time, but his shot would be stopped by the sliding keeper. Just two minutes later Morgan would picked up a loose ball in the box, but his reaction shot would hit the post. The remainder of the overtime periods would see back and forth action, but neither team could net the golden goal.
Frederickson was called upon to make numerous key saves in the game and finished with 20 saves on the afternoon.
The men's team returns to action tomorrow in the Dragon Invitational at Howard C.C. against Delaware Tech-Stanton. The game is scheduled for a 12:00pm kickoff.
