Hagerstown Knocks off Howard Community College
Columbia, Md. - The HCC men's soccer team captured their fourth win on the season when they came away with a 2-1 victory over last season's Region XX DIII Champion and NJCAA National Tournament participant, Howard Community College.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, when sophomore Genc Sopa (Kosovo, Europe/Lipian) hammered a left footed shot past the Dragon keeper in the 6th minute. Freshman Jazer Mauricio (Hagerstown, Md./North) played the ball down the line to Sopa and he took one move to beat a defender and placed the ball into the corner of the goal.
Howard would rally and even the game in the 27th minute when the Hawks cleared the ball out after a corner kick but on the ensuing play, a Dragon player would be left alone inside the penalty box. After receiving the ball just on-sides, the player slotted it past sophomore keeper Chucky Kipe (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
Hagerstown would net the game winning goal in the 37th minute when freshman Ruben Ayllon (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) sent a driven ball into the goal box, where he found Sopa for his second goal of the match and his eighth goal of the season.
After half the Dragons would test Kipe with numerous chances, but he would come up successful on all shot attempts. Kipe secured the win for the Hawks with a clutch save in the final 15 seconds of the match. Howard would send all their players forward and a cross from the left side would be sent into the box. Kipe would challenge for the flighted ball and do enough to tip it out of danger and then land on it as time expired. He would be credited with 11 saves on the afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks move into a tie for second place in the MDJUCO with a 3-2 record and 4-3 overall.
