HCC Defeats NOVA for First Win of Season

Leesburg, Va.-  The Hawks needed three second half goals to secure a 3-1 victory in their first game of the 2014 season.

HCC started with urgency and almost found the net 38 seconds into the match when sophomore Jacob Hargett (Myersville, Md./Middletown) struck a 20 yard shot that forced the NOVA goalkeeper to tip the ball over the crossbar. Northern Virginia would respond quickly though and gain momentum in the 12th minute. A poor clearance off a corner kick saw the ball land at the top of the box. A NOVA player would strike a low shot that found the far corner of the goal.

Just five minutes later, HCC freshman goalkeeper Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) would be forced to make a diving save from a breakaway in order to keep the Hawks in the match. In the 30th minute, Mejia would be called upon again to make a one-handed, point blank save.

In the second half, Hagerstown would take control of the match and pressed for the equalizer. Sophomore Leland Creadick (Myersville, Md./Middletown) all but had a goal in the 51st minute, when he curled a shot far post; however, the NOVA goalkeeper would make a save on his attempt. HCC finally broke the scoring drought in the 57th minute when sophomore Jonah Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Wayensboro) played a through ball to Hargett who ran onto it and then juked the keeper before placing the ball in the empty net.

Seven minutes later Hagerstown took the 2-1 lead when Smith picked out Creadick on a perfectly placed ball off a corner kick. Creadick would rise above the defenders and head the ball past the Northern Virginia goalkeeper.

The Hawks extended their second half scoring in the 64th minute when Hargett played a ball across the box to freshman Collin McVicker (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport). McVicker would control the pass and placed it into the far right corner of the goal to secure the victory for HCC.

Mejia would finish the match with 16 saves, earning his first collegiate victory in net. The Hawks will now travel to Wilmington, NC on Saturday for the Cape Fear Invitational where they will take on Cape Fear and Spartenburg Methodist.
