Hagerstown Wins Home Opener
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team defeated Patrick Henry College, 5-1, for their home opener.
Sophomore Jonah Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) tallied his third goal of the season in the 9th minute, when took a pass from freshman Jacob Bickley (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and split the defenders before placing the ball in the side netting.
In the 16th minute, the Sentinels looked to get back in the game, but freshman goalkeeper Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) tipped the free kick attempt over the crossbar.
HCC extended their lead in the 20th minute, when sophomore Jacob Hargett (Myersville, Md./Middletown) got on the end of a through ball played by freshman Brad Mills (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring). He hammered his shot low and past the PHC goalkeeper.
Due to thunderstorms in the area, the game would be suspended for 30 minutes, with the Hawks holding a 2-0 lead.
When both teams returned to the field, it was Hargett who would net his second goal of the game and MDJUCO leading fifth goal on the year. Hargett would one-time volley a cross sent in by freshman Emmanuel Sahr (Ghana, West Africa/Beechcroft).
In the 56th minute, freshman Nery Fuentes (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) scored his first collegiate goal when Smith hit Fuentes right in stride so he could strike a hard 20 yard shot that curled away from the PHC goalkeeper.
The Hawks would round out their scoring in the 69th minute when Smith picked out Bickley for his first goal of the year. Smith's assist was his second on the day and MDJUCO leading sixth on the year.
PHC spoiled Hagerstown's shut out attempt by converting a breakaway opportunity with just 40 seconds remaining in the match.
Mejia would finish with five saves and would be credited with the win, bringing the Hawks overall record to 3-2-0. HCC returns to action September 10, when they host MDJUCO opponent Prince George's at 4:00pm
