HCC Defeats Prince Georges for MDJUCO Win
Hagerstown, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team squared off against MDJUCO opponent Prince George's on "Sophomore Day" for the Hawks.
Freddy Velasquez (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), Chucky Kipe (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), Nathan Pryor (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg), Brandon Barlow (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport), Chip Rittenhouse (Hagerstown, Md./South), Genc Sopa (Kosovo, Europe/Lipian), and Mamadou Jallow (Gambia, Africa/Thomas Johnson) were all honored prior to the game for their hardwork and dedication over their two-year careers.
The Hawks jumped on PG early and controlled the tempo and pace from the initial whistle. In the 18th minute, Sopa looked to get on the scorer's sheet, but after cutting the ball past a defender, his shot rang off the far post and was cleared out of danger. Just two minutes later, Sopa was able to put the Hawks up 1-0, when he netted his conference leading 12th goal of the year. Freshmn Osman Ramizov (Hagerstown, Md./North) attacked down the right flank and shouldered off a defender to cut an angle towards the goal, where he found Sopa for the two-touch goal.
HCC would add an insurance goal in the 30th minute when Ramizov flicked a ball into the path of Jallow, who was able to power a shot into the upper corner of the goal.
Hagerstown continued to dominate play in the second half, but could not find the net for a third time on the afternoon. Kipe recorded four saves in 79 minutes, while Velasquez came in to preserve the shutout for the remaining 11 minutes.
With the victory, the Hawks (10-6-0, 6-4-0) record double-digit wins for the fourth time in five years. The win was also head coach Brian Eichelberger's 50th career win.
HCC looks to keep the streak going when they travel to nonconference opponent Lord Fairfax on October 14, for a 12:00 kickoff.
