Hawks Earn Shutout Victory over Prince George's
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team posted a shutout win over MDJUCO opponent Prince George's Community College, for their third straight victory.
HCC started the game off strong, maintaining much of the possession and in the sixth minute, a quick touch from sophomore Jonah Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) to classmate Jacob Hargett (Myersville, Md./Middletown) saw a chance go over the crossbar. The Owl's would respond though in the 10th minute and a breakaway chance would miss just wide right of the goal.
Hagerstown saw another great opportunity to grab a goal in the 30th when freshman Zack Robertson (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) sailed in a long ball that forced the keeper to make a save off the crossbar. Again though, PG would get the next chance in the 38th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) would make a kick save on another breakaway chance.
With just two minutes before half, Hargett all but put the Hawks on the board, but his header would be saved off the line by the PG goalkeeper. Both teams would head into the half tied 0-0.
HCC finally broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when a cross by freshman Jacob Bickley (Frederick, Md./Frederick) would be controlled by sophomore Dillon Eyler (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) and played across the box to Smith. Smith would take one touch and hammer the ball past the diving Prince George's goalkeeper.
After the goal, PG would step up the pressure and force HCC to play stout defense. Mejia would make a crucial save in the 71st minute, to secure his second shutout on the year. He would finish with 14 saves on the afternoon.
With the win, HCC improves to 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MDJUCO. HCC returns to action September 12, when they travel to MDJUCO opponent Montgomery-Rockville at 5:30pm.
