#4 Hagerstown to meet #1 CCBC-Essex in Region XX Semi-Finals
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men’s soccer team will travel to Harford Community College to take on CCBC-Essex for a semi-final showdown in the Division I Region XX Tournament. The two squads will meet Wednesday in Bel Air, MD at 4:00pm.
The Hawks earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while the Knights were awarded with the No. 1 seed.
HCC (10-9-0, 6-6-0) enters the match after dropping the last two regular season games (vs. Mercer, vs. Rockville) while CCBC-Essex (8-4-3, 6-3-1) is unbeaten in their last five games. The two teams met earlier in the year with the Knights getting the 3-0 decision after two first half goals and one goal with just three seconds remaining in the game.
CCBC-Essex is led by sophomore Vinnie Magliano who has 9 goals and 3 assists for 21 points. Also, freshman Kyle Six anchors the midfield with six goals, six assists, for 18points. In net, the Knights have freshman Jacob Ossie who has made seven starts and recorded two shutouts.
Freshman Jonah Smith, leads Hagerstown Community College with 10 goals, 11 assists for 31 points. Classmate Akheem Riley is second on the team in points with 20, coming from seven goals, six assists. Freshman Jusseth Velazquez has tallied eight goals and three assists for 19 points. Sophomore Adam Carrier has started 18 games in net for the Hawks this season. He is ranked 2nd in MDJUCO in save percentage (.788) and has 136 saves and four shutouts.
The last time the two teams met in the playoffs was in 2010, when Hagerstown would hold a 2-0 advantage for much of the game before surrendering the tying goal with just seven minutes left. CCBC-Essex would net the golden goal in the overtime period to conclude the HCC season.
In other Division I Region XX tournament action, the No. 2 Haford Community College Fighting Owls (10-5-1, 8-2-1) will square-off against the No. 3 College of Southern Maryland Hawks (7-6-0, 6-4-0) at Harford Stadium on Wednesday at 5:30pm.
