The Hagerstown Community College men’s soccer will travel to
Harford Community College to take on Harford for a semi-final showdown in the
Division I Region XX Tournament. The two squads will meet Wednesday in Bel Air,
MD at 5:30pm.
The Hawks earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while the
Fighting Owls were awarded with the No. 1 seed.
HCC (13-6-0, 7-5-0) is coming into the match riding a
four-game winning streak, where they have outscored their opponents, 16-2. The
last time the Hawks lost (10/10) was against Harford, when the Owls used 3
second half goals to defeat Hagerstown.
Harford (10-5-0, 8-3-0) is also on a four-game winning streak, entering
Wednesday’s showdown. HCC is not afraid to play away from their home confines,
as they are 8-2 on the road, while Harford is 5-3 at Harford Stadium.
The Fighting Owls are led by sophomore, Chris Cheelsman, who
has 12 goals and 3 assists for 27 points. Harford claims the MDJUCO assist
leader in sophomore Dylan Tipton who has dished out seven to his teammates. In
net, the Fighting Owls have split time between freshman keeper Christian Vito
and sophomore Windell Reid. Reid has
made eight starts, giving up nine goals, while Vito has been credited with five
starts and surrendering 13 goals.
Sophomore Genc Sopa (Kosovo, Europe/Lipian), leads
Hagerstown Community College with 14 goals, three assists for 31 points. He
leads all MDJUCO in goals scored and points, while only competing in 14 games
this season. Sophomore Mamadou Jallow (Gambia, Africa/Thomas Johnson) is second
on the team in points with 20, coming from seven goals, six assists. He is tied
for second in the conference in assists. Sophomore Chucky Kipe (Frederick,
Md./Tuscarora) has started all 18 games in net for the Hawks this season. He is
ranked 2nd in the nation with his 162 saves and he has posted 3 shutouts. His
.875 save percentage is good for 10th in the nation.
In other Division I Region XX tournament action, the No. 2
Essex Community College Knights (8-6-1, 6-4-1) will square-off against the No.
3 College of Southern Maryland Hawks (8-5-0, 8-3-0) at Harford Stadium on
Wednesday at 3:00pm.
The Division I Region XX Championship is scheduled for
Saturday, October 27 at 1:30pn at Harford Community College.
