Smithsburg Senior, Andrew Owens, picks the Hawks
Hagerstown, Md.- Smithsburg High School senior, Andrew Owens, has recently announced his commitment to the Hagerstown Community College men’s soccer team.
Owens, who earned First Team All-County All-MVAL Antietam Conference and First Team All-County in 2015 was the focal point in the Leopards midfield. While a captain at Smithsburg, Owens tallied a team-high five goals and three assists for 13 points. The Leopards would finish 3-8-1 overall during his senior season.
In 2014, Owens helped Smithsburg to their best record in 10 years when they finish 7-9-0.
Owens competes in club soccer with the U-19 Smithsburg team. He recorded eight goals and dished out five assists for 21 points during this past season. His team finished 11-1-1.
Owens is also a varsity member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. With Owens commitment, the HCC Men's Soccer program has now featured 13 former Leopards in the last seven years.
At Hagerstown, Owens will suit up with former high school teammates, Nate Redmond and Tim Horning for the 2016 season.
The Hawks have also received commitments from Montgomery County players, Azaria Honsou and Angel Osegueda, along with Baltimore native Benny Brankoff and Frederick residents Javier Posadas and Fredy Barerra.
"Andrew is a very dedicated and hard working athlete" mentioned head coach Brandon Rethemeyer. "Andrew was called upon a lot in high school to be a leader and play maker and he accepted the challenge very well. We feel he has the versatility to play multiple position at the collegiate level, so it will be exciting to see Andrew competing in preseason.
