Hawks Secure Tie Against Mustangs
Owings Mills, Md.- After surrendering two goals, the Hawks rallied back to secure a 2-2 tie against Stevenson University J.V.
Hagerstown would control much of the play in the opening minutes, out shooting the Mustangs 4-0, but the Hawks couldn't get past the goalkeeper. Stevenson would however net the first goal on their first opportunity after a miss-hit ball landed behind a Hawk defender where a Mustang player ran onto it and slowly placed the ball in the far corner of the goal.
Following the goal, Hagerstown would settle back in and dominate the remainder of the half, but couldn't net the equalizing goal.
In the 56th minute, the Hawks all but tied the game. Jermaine Hardy, Jr. (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) would beat a Mustang defender and slot ed the ball to Alejandro C. Oliart (Germantown, Md./Northwest), but his one-time shot would richotte off the post. Immediately following the shot off the post, Stevenson would counter attack and beat an HCC defender one-on-one and place the ball past freshman Tim Horning (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg).
Hagerstown would chip away at the lead in the 66th minute, when Hardy again beat a defender and attacked down the sideline before picking out freshman Thomas Alvarez (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg). Alvarez would control the past, and curl the ball into the far corner of the goal for his first collegiate score. Hagerstown would continue to pile on the pressure and eventually net the tying goal in the 84th minute when freshman Trey Jackson (Montgomery, Al./IMG Academy) launched a long throw in to the box and classmate Eric Madrid (Germantown, Md./Northwest) struck a perfectly placed shot into the net.
HCC looked to the win the game with just seconds left but a counter attack chance saw a cross go into the hands of the Mustang keeper as time ran out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard) finished the game with three saves while second half replacement, Horning, recorded four. The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, September 30 when they square off against College of Southern Maryland at 4:00pm.
