HCC Drops Season Opener
Hagerstown, Md.- The Hagerstown Community College men's soccer team opened up at home Wednesday, but the scoreline wouldn't go in favor of the Hawks.
HCC would control the tempo from the initial whistle, but Northern Virginia capitalized on a Hawk turnover in the midfield, in the 15th minute. Hagerstown would lose possession and then ensuing counter attack would see the ball curled far post past sophomore goalkeeper, Cristian Mejia (Germantown, Md./Quince Orchard). HCC would rally just nine minutes when freshman Thomas Alvarez (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) back heeled the ball to teammate Christian Garcia (Los Angeles, Ca./William Taft) who bent the ball around the goalkeeper from 25 yards out.
After HCC would see three more opportunities squandered, the Nighthawks took the lead in the 31st minute. NOVA would attack down the flank and cross the ball into an unmarked player inside the Hawk goal box. After a controlled touch, the ball would be shot past Mejia. Hagerstown would mount a late comeback in the first half when freshman Geordy Nyam (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) would be taken down from behind by a Northern Virgina defender. The penalty kick would go over the goal and the Hawks would remain down 2-1 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Hawks would dominate play forcing many turnovers which led to goal scoring opportunities. In the 55th minute, Nyam played a ball into classmate Jermaine Hardy, Jr. (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) but his shot would be saved by the NOVA goalkeeper. HCC would also have an chance to equalize the game with just six minutes remaining. Freshman Alejandro C. Oliart (Germantown, Md./Northwest) placed a shot that beat the Nighthawk goalkeeper, but the ball would miss just wide of the far post.
Mejia would finish the game with nine saves and the Hawks would fall to 0-1-0 on the season. HCC returns to action Monday when they square off against Penn State Mt. Alto.
