Hawks Shutout in Season Opener
Hagerstown, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College men’s soccer surrendered three first half goals and fell to Division I, Region XIX runner-up, Mercer County Community College.
The Vikings would set the tone early when shot from 35 yards out would force a save from sophomore, Tim Horning (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg). Just one minute later though a long ball would be misplayed by a Hawk defender and would allow Mercer to head on a breakaway. The ball would be calmly placed past Horning and into the right corner of the goal.
Following the goal, both teams would trade chances, but it would be MCC that would strike again in the 27th minute. A long cross would be flicked back into play before crossing the end line and it would catch HCC off guard, leaving a wide open Viking player to strike the ball from six yards out past Horning.
In the 38th minute the Hawks would look to get a goal back, but an attempted bicycle kick from sophomore Nathan Redmond (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) would go just wide. On the ensuing drive, Mercer would kick a long ball down the middle that would fall to the feet of a Viking forward. After a quick move, a low hard shot would be fired past Horning.
The Hawks would close out the half strong but a volley from 30 yards from sophomore Eric Madrid (Germantown, Md./Northwest) would go wide.
In the second half, Mercer would net their fourth goal when an unmarked player 18 yards out found the right side of the goal. Hagerstown would keep battling in hopes to grab a goal back when sophomore, Leo Anjos (Recife, Brazil) would riffle a shot from 40 yards out forcing the Viking keeper to make a save and collect the rebound.
Horning would finish the match with seven saves while second half replacement, Ian Hose (Clear Spring, Md./Clear Spring) would finish with one.
